“They (the marine turbines) proved to be
extremely reliable... As an example of this reliability, the main propulsion
turbines of the U.S.S. Iowa class battleships, which were designed and
manufactured to the same standards, required no significant refurbishment
when these ships (Iowa, Missouri, New Jersey) were returned to active duty
(after 30 years mothballed).” |

Abstract from Issues and
Answers PDF:
The steam turbine component could be shipped to site
within about ten weeks from the date of order, anywhere in North America.
Complete installation of the turbine-generator set would take only as long
as the arrival of the new equipment components, principally the generator
and gear reducer. That being said, the time for the complete set in
service should be approximately half that of the 14 months to two years
customarily required by the manufacturers of new steam turbine generators.
The equipment has unsurpassed flexibility. One or more HP and/or LP
turbines can be linked. A set of four LP turbines would consistently
deliver 44-48 megawatts. Optionally, synchronous self-shifting clutches
can be provided, clutching and declutching one or more HP or LP admission
units automatically to increase and decrease capacity as needs arise, or
as plant operational variables dictate the availability of high or low
pressure steam.
